Mike always starts with photographs taken by himself as part of the creative process, and then for the painting, uses indian ink underpainting with washes of egg tempera on gessoed wood; a technique devised with the 13th and 14th Century. The painting is then digitized, brought into the 21st Century, and merged with elements of the initial photograph. I love the way he illuminates the canvas with flowing colours, sheer textures and glowing light.
